the burial, I asked the three survivors to reflect on their experience.
Out of these intimate conversations, a partner and I put together this
mini radio documentary for a class with NPR's celebrated Kitchen Sisters: :: Rubik's Selected for Air on
Current TV :: In January, I went to the International Rubik’s Cube Competition in San Francisco. I spoke with top competitors about why they love to
cube, how theyperfect their technique, and how they got into cubing
in the firstplace. I also happened to catch the setting of a new world
record forspeed solving. I uploaded this piece to the Current TV website
whichmeans if I collect enough ‘greenlights’ this piece
will go on air likemy piece about the Ski Jump in San Francisco. That’s
where you come in. :: India: A Pound of Flesh on FRONTLINE/World :: This past March I went to India to investigate the
black market trade in human kidneys. I had been reading about the story
for months but it was pretty shocking to actually go to India and see
scores of women with telltale scars peeking out from under their sari’s
from where they’d had their kidney removed. I met several people
who’d sold a kidney, a broker who arranges the deals, the doctors
who do the surgeries, and some of the government officials who are supposed
to stop the trade. I put together an 11-minute mini-documentary about
the story and I’m thrilled to say it was picked up by the PBS
show FRONTLINE/World as part of their online Rough Cut series. :: Radio version of "A Pound
of Flesh" on Marketplace :: I also cut a radio version of the story for the National
Public Radio program Marketplace. :: “The Aidan Hawken Experiment” mini-doc released :: My friend Aidan Hawken (www.aidanhawken.com ), who released his 4 thalbum last year, just played the first show for his outstanding newsolo album “Pillows and Records.” Characteristically, he wanted to dosomething special for the show, so rather than do a straight rock show,he had original charts written for an accompanying string trio andhired the best in the business to sit in and play with him. A daringexperiment indeed. Check out the mini-documentary here: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=902935974&n=2 :: Interview with Musician Irvin Mayfield Airs on Weekend Edition :: Irvin Mayfield is one of the most talented jazz trumpet players livingin America today. When I went down to New Orleans this past spring tointerview people about the slow recovery process following HurricaneKatrina, I spoke with Irvin about his own losses and how he’srecovering. This is a just short excerpt of a much longer conversationI had with Irvin, but it’s worth checking out: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5492839 :: Sonoma County Apple Farmers on PBS :: My mini-doc about the plight of Sonoma County Apple Farmers was selected for air by KRCB, a PBS station in Northern California.
